Frequently Asked Questions
Why hire a professional chimney sweep?
A1 Chimney Sweeps guarantee a thorough clean for all sizes of chimneys. We use a wide range of brushes and rods, to ensure the removal of soot and debris from any chimney or flue.
As soot is carcinogenic, and dangerous to inhale, chimney sweeping must only be carried out by a professional, with the correct equipment.
Why do I need my chimney to be swept?
Over time, chimney’s develop blockages. These blockages can be caused by a build up of soot, debris, bird’s nests or crumbled brickwork.
It is important to make sure your chimney is clear of any blockages. Blockages cause the airflow through your chimney to be limited; trapping toxic gases inside your home.
Sweeping a chimney with brushes and rods is the only method of cleaning recommended to remove stubborn blockages, and to guarantee a clear airflow.
How often should I have my chimney swept?
Once a year, for appliances burning smokeless fuels.
Twice a year, for appliances burning domestic coal.
Quarterly, for appliances burning wood.
What can I burn in my appliance?
What you can burn is dependent upon the type of appliance you own.
Log Burners – only wood should be burnt in these.
Multi-Fuel Burners – use only smokeless fuel and dry seasoned wood in these.
Please note: It is dangerous to burn wet wood in any appliance. Over time, this will develop a build up of soot on your chimney wall or flue liner, that could catch fire. Wood should be dry before use. If you are collecting your own wood to burn, this should be stored until dry, in a suitable log store.
Never burn household waste, plastics or chemicals in any appliance. These products can produce toxic gases and corrosive vapours; endangering your health.
